#Nigeria2015: PDP reviews timetable for primaries...

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP‎ has reviewed its timetable for the 2015 primary election for all offices.

The party had earlier fixed October 29 and December 6 for its gubernatorial and presidential primaries respectively, while that of ‎the National Assembly seats was fixed for November 22.

But in a statement by its National Organising Secretary, Abubakar Mustapha, on Saturday, the PDP has now rescheduled the primaries.

Under the new arrangement, the State House of Assembly primaries has now been slated for November 29, that for the House of Representatives December 6 and that for the Senate December 7.

The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Saturday said his fate as Speaker of Nigeria’s second lawmaking chamber is in the hands of God.

He also said his colleagues, who elected him Speaker, rather than anyone else, would determine whether he should continue to lead them or not.

Since defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] to the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] on October 28, the PDP and the Nigeria police have been plotting to oust him from his position as Speaker.

While the PDP plotted to reconvene the House from its current adjournment without Mr. Tambuwal’s consent, the police withdrew his security aides, saying since he defected from the party on whose platform he was elected into the lower legislative chamber, he had ceased to be Speaker.

Nigerian military releases another 125 Boko Haram suspects...

Two days after they handed over some 42 suspected Boko Haram terrorists to the Borno state government, military officials at the 7 Division of the Nigeria Army today freed yet another set of 125 suspects after weeks of investigation absolved them of alleged complicity with the terrorist group.

The spokesman of the 7 Division, Maiduguri, Usman Sani, a colonel, told journalists during the ongoing handover ceremony that the 125 released suspects were part of the 152 Boko Haram suspects arrested in September this year.

He said after thorough military investigation, the 125 were deemed clean and had to be released.

The 125 released suspects were ferried into Maiduguri after a detour journey from Biu through Gombe, via Yobe state to Maiduguri.One of the released detainees told ABUJA REPOTERS, “We have spent over 45 days in military detention but we thank God that our lives were spared.

Nigerian singer Wizkid was arrested from his Nairobi Crown Plaza hotel room on Saturday afternoon and quizzed by police only hours before his flight back to Lagos.

The arrest was in connection with allegations that he was caught smoking illegal substances. The incident happened at around 1pm just as the Caro singer was checking out of his hotel room where he has been staying for a week, since his last week’s concert.

Zainab Usman, a doctoral candidate in International Development at Oxford University and her colleague, Dr. Olly Owen, British, worked on this scholarly analysis of the coming general elections in Nigeria for months. They have now published their report, making projections on the likely outcomes of the election.

How accurate the predictions would be remains to be seen. But it is an interesting analysis that anyone interested in the election anywhere in the world should read.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is deliberately planning to shut out Christians in the country from voting in the 2015 general elections.

The President of CAN, Ayo Oritsejafor, who stated this at the association’s national executive council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, said he was suspicious of a sinister motive by the Commission following its poor handling of the distribution of the permanent voters’ cards.

He, however, warned that Christians would resist such a plan if the Commission was truly harbouring it just as he appealed to faithful to register and vote in other to participate in governance.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has stopped the sale of dollars to some categories of importers at its twice-weekly regulated foreign exchange market in order to save the naira from falling.

The move is meant to also reduce the pressure on the naira amid falling oil prices and perceived dollarisation of the economy, according to industry analysts.

In a circular released on Thursday, the central bank specifically said it would no longer sell dollars to importers of electronics, finished products, information technology equipment, generators, telecommunication equipment and invisible transactions at its Retail Dutch Auction System forex market.

The Presidency has said there is no part of the world where the President resigns during an ongoing war.

It therefore challenged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to tell Nigerians where such presidents had resigned during war time.

The Presidency was reacting to the demand by the leadership of the APC, including its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign because of the on-going war against the country by the members of the Boko Haram sect.

Reacting on behalf of the President, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, asked Nigerians to ignore such calls.

Former Nigeria stars Peter Rufai and Clement Temile and some other ex-players on Wednesday paid a visit to former Stationery Stores captain, Yomi Peters, on his sickbed, at the General Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos.

The others are Segun Oguns, Ikechukwu Ewenzor and ex-Super Falcons player, Shola Otis.

Peters, an ex-international, who represented Nigeria in the 1970s, was diagnosed with gastric tumour by doctors last week at the General Hospital and has been battling to stay alive for about two weeks.

Despite his contributions to the game as a player and coach in Lagos State, the 74-year-old Peters has been left to his fate at the hospital. Our correspondent learnt that the Stores legend has been unable to pay his bills and may be held back by officials of the hospital, if he fails to pay the bills after treatment.

Temile, who led the ex-players, consoled Peters, adding that the group was behind him and would visit him again on Friday to render some assistance to him.

Police arrest another Lagos DPO for rape...

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Oladipo Afolayan, for allegedly raping a woman in his office.

The development comes a few months after another Lagos DPO, Mr. Adekunle Awe, was arrested for allegedly raping a woman, Idowu Akinwunmi, in his office at the Onikan Police Division.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Afolayan, who is a Superintendent of Police, had only been recently posted to the Magodo Police Post when the incident allegedly occurred.

It was learnt that the woman he allegedly raped was a suspect in an ongoing investigation.

It was gathered that following a report by the victim, Afolayan was arrested and brought before the Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti.

A former member of House of Representatives and a senatorial aspirant, Mr. Bode Mustapha, has accused the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, of double standard by withdrawing the security guards of the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, after he defected to the All Progressives Congress.

He said should anything untoward happen to the Speaker, the IG should be held responsible.

Mustapha said this on Thursday in Abeokuta shortly after submitting his form of intent to contest the senatorial seat of the Ogun – Central constituency at the secretariat of the APC.

He noted that the IG refused to withdraw the security aides of Governor Olusegun Mimiko when he defected from the Labour Party to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Synagogue: Joshua fails to appear before coroner...

The founder, Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, on Wednesday failed to appear before the coroner, Magistrate O. A. Komolafe, probing the cause of the September 12 building collapse in the church.

The church lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, told the coroner that Joshua failed to appear before the coroner because he was not served any summon.

Consequently, Komolafe said another appearance date would be given to Joshua when the court reconvenes on Thursday (today).

Joshua had been slated to appear before the coroner on Wednesday along with the contractor who built the collapsed six-storey building.

Boko Haram invades Kogi prison, frees 143...

The police and the Army have launched a manhunt for inmates of the Koton-Karfi Prison in Kogi State, who were set free by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents.

There were about 145 inmates in the 80-year-old prison as of 10pm on Sunday when the gunmen gained entry into the prison by blowing up its iron bars with an improvised explosive device.

A male prison officer and an inmate were injured while another inmate was found dead after the attackers left.

Twelve of those who fled were said to have returned to the prison under controversial circumstances.

The Deputy Governor of Borno state, Zanna Mustapha, said in Yola on Monday that going by the ease with which Boko Haram was capturing territories in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, the three North-Eastern states would soon be history.

“If the Federal Government does not add extra effort, in the next two to three months, the three North-Eastern states will no longer be in existence,” he said. “The Federal Government has tried its best but their best is not enough because rather than going after the insurgents, it is the insurgents that are going after us. It is a big crime that the criminals are better equipped than the military and they are just few kilometres from the Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states capitals.”

Popular Nigerian comedian, Julius Agwu, has withdrawn from the 2015 governorship election race in his native state of Rivers .

A statement by his Manager, Sunday Uwem, stated that Mr. Agwu stepped down after a meeting with his kinsmen from Ikwere.

“There was a meeting between Julius Agwu and his kinsmen from Ikwere, and it was agreed that he should step down from the governorship race.

The Presidency Tuesday responded to remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the security situation in the country, saying some of his past utterances contributed to the escalation of insurgent activities in the North.

But in a swift response, some supporters of Mr. Abubakar, under the aegis of Turaki Vanguard, condemned the Presidency for disparaging the former vice president.

Mr. Abubakar, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had spoken at a press conference on Monday in Abuja during which he lamented the security situation in the north eastern part of Nigeria.

He said the Federal Government had not done enough to tackle the insecurity in the northern part of the country and called for the support of the international community to bring an end to the situation.

Contrary to the claim by the Nigerian military that it is on top of the security challenge in the commercial town of Mubi in Adamawa state, the dreaded Boko Haram sect is consolidating its position in the the captured town and has indeed renamed it “Madinatul Islam” meaning the city of Islam.

Aliyu Bala, one of the residents, who could not leave Mubi at the time of the invasion of the town by the insurgents, disclosed this in a telephone chat with journalists. He said the insurgents had taken complete control of the town.

“They mounted check points and surveillance at strategic locations, brandishing riffles but asking us not to panic or run away,” Mr. Bala said.

Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide and Chancellor of Covenant University, David Oyedepo, shared his opinion on what was wrong with Nigeria’s leadership.

Speaking at the 13th Matriculation of the institution at the Cannanland, Ota, the multi-millionaire cleric said that lack of accountability and lack of integrity became the “cancer of our leadership”, Daily Independent reports.

He stressed the importance of having responsible leaders working hard to exercise their duty.

A group of suspected Boko Haram gunmen have reportedly attacked a police station in Nafada town, Ashaka cement factory in Gombe state.

The police station was burnt down, while the armoury attached to it was looted. The cement factory workers are reportedly hiding in the bush as there is nobody who can protect them.

According to a witness, who contacted The Cable via telephone, the raid started around 13:30-14:00 on November 4, 2014, Tuesday.

The attackers, who came on about 50 motorcycles, did not face any resistance, as the policemen ran for their lives.

According to tweets by some residents, a military checkpoint by Ngada Bridge has also been attacked. The facilities of MTN telecommunications operator and the building of the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat have been set ablaze.

Some local fishermen have reportedly found parts of an aircraft suspected to be the missing Nigeria Air Force’s Alpha Jet (NAF 466) which disappeared on September 12, during routine operations in the northern part of Adamawa State in the River Benue.

According to the local fishermen, they discovered the aircraft at Kwa Ine Village, Demsa Local Government, Adamawa State about 50 Kilometers away from Yola, the state capital, Premium Times reports.

One of the fishermen in the area, Audu Vrati said: “At the time it crashed, the level of water in the river was high occasioned by the rainy season and the fishermen were able to see it now because the volume of water had receded.”

Mr. Vrati added that security operatives had already cordoned off the place and were preventing people from visiting the scene of the discovery.

A federal high court sitting in the federal capital territory, Abuja, on Monday ruled that Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal is and remains the Speaker of the House of Representatives, hence the status quo with regards to his official position as Number 4 citizen should be maintained by all parties. The judge also ordered that the House of Reps shall not reconvene until the 3rd December date that has been approved by Speaker Tambuwal. Explosion killed over 10 in Potiskum, Yobe State, on November 3, 2014, Monday, as Shiite Muslims of the area celebrated the Day of Ashura, The Nation reports.

According to an eyewitness, this was a suicide bomb attack that targeted the members of the Shiite group, the Islamic Brotherhood of Nigeria.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest in the crowd of people, killing many on the spot.

Adamu Mohammed, a resident of Potiskum, confirmed the development to The PremiumTimes in a telephone conversation. He put the number of victims to 20 persons dead and dozens of injured.

“My sister lost three of her sons in the blast,” the man said in despair.

Ahmad Salkida, Nigerian journalist who reportedly has access to the leadership of the Boko Haram sect has revealed a lot about the insurgents.

In a question and answer section organized by Jibrin Ibrahim, a Nigerian political scientist and activist & ICT consultant, Akin Akintayo, using the #WhatDoesBHWant hashtag, Salkida gave a chilling revelation of what the Boko Haram wants.

According to Salkida, Boko Haram wants to return ‘Islam’ to what they view as d interpretation of first generation Muslims and so they indoctrinate their members to hate even their own parents, family etc if they are associated with ‘Kufr’ 3(denial of truth).He said that Boko Haram who has one of the fastest growing army want to implement their brand of Sharia and Muslims, Christians or Atheists who oppose their doctrine will be attacked.

He explained that even the Sultan of Sokoto becomes Nigeria’s leader and every Christian converts to Islam, Boko Haram will not stop the killings as their grouse is with the institution of democracy and the people’s way of life, therefore every supporter of secular institution must be destroyed.

The pastor who has received national and international attention for his televangelism, which has sometimes been critical of the Nigerian government made the real reasons why he left the church known.

He also talked on various issues bothering from pastors using anointing oil, handkerchiefs for miracle, members of a church not being able to attend schools which church money was used to build and many more.

Below are excerpts from the interview:

You were in Deeper Life and The Redeemed churches. At what point did you decide to open your own and why?

That’s what you call memory lane. I was in Deeper Life for five years, between 1978 and December 1983. Brother Kumuyi was and is still a great teacher of the Word. The person that put the fear of God in me was Brother Kumuyi. He laid the foundation for systematic teaching that many people see me do today.

The Federal Government has announced plans to pay the withheld salaries as well as return the ceased passport of the Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Nation reports.

A source within the Presidency said the decision is part of President Goodluck Jonathan’s total reconciliation with the Emir, who was the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It was gathered that the olive branch is meant to ensure the Emir’s neutrality during next year’s elections although the president is aware of his closeness to the leaders of the major opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The source revealed that after the open meeting last Thursday, the President and the Emir met at the inner recess of the Presidential Villa for about five minutes, adding that some political leaders from Kano, who witnessed the session, were all excited that there is a new understanding between the President and the Emir.

You’re more likely to be down in the dumps.

The more lonely you feel, the more likely you are to have depressive symptoms, according to research at the University of Chicago.

‘When you’re lonely, brain hormones associated with stress such as cortisol become active, which can cause depression,’ Rabin explains. ‘In fact, for mild and moderate depression social interaction is even more effective at alleviating symptoms than a prescription antidepressant.’

When will some ladies learn? Recently, worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church got the shock of their lives when some of them were turned away at the gate for indecent dressing.

One of them, dressed in a black sleeveless dress, a tiny yellow belt and heels, Julia, a regular worshipper, in her mid-20s was surprised by the new rule in church that saw her miss the 8.30 mass.

Complaining bitterly about the new rules in her church, Julia said, “Two people, a woman and a man told me that my type of clothes were banned from church and I should change into a proper attire.”

Prophet David Folorunsho Oyekan, the founder and President of the Divine Ministry for InterReligious Harmony (DMIRH), has claimed that the Boko Haram sect has been hijacked.

According to him, the sect operating now and causing havoc was not the original group that was formed in Borno in 2009 by the late Mohammed Yusuf, The Nation reports.
