He was one of the longest serving Senators the country has ever produced. He has also served as the longest serving Senate President. But go to Otukpo, where he hails from and you will wonder whether truly he is from the community or from the State. There are no industries to show that the community ever produced such an illustrous son. Neither are there amenities either. What the people had to show for his stay in power since the ministry era when he served as military Governor and minister of various ministries are a golf course and a radio station, well there's a television station in the offing!
Truly, he has affected the lives of some of the elites in the state by facilitating their appointments into posts in the Federal government. But that is where it stops. The roads leading to Gboko are nothing to write home about.

The access road to the eastern part of Nigeria that passes through Senator Mark"s community simply epitomises what his years in the Senate stands for. The strech of the road that leads to around Gboko is good, but once you enter Benue you spend more than three hours on a distance that would ordinarily have taken about thirty minutes. It is a Federal road, just like the stretch that leads from Markurdi to Gboko which for years was also in a sorry state. Each visit to Benue state for his children's wedding those days were always like journey to hell. Yet the people would always troop out to come and felicitate with him on aƧcount of the free food and drinks he provided.

Meanwhile, the Federal might was always there to ensure that he won reelection. Now with the PDP in opposition, it might look like true payback time for him. Not a few people from his constituency felt that he could have done more especially when he was virtually the country's most influential politician having single-handedly handed over the Presidency to Jonathan with the doctrine of necessity over who had so much influence.
The people of Benue State now have a wider opportunity either to go for someone whose choice was always blinded by the elite or start afresh.
