----After CBN failed to unearth thousands of fake staff
It was an issue that the former Commandant General, Dr Olu Abolurin battled for long and despite all his efforts, including bringing in CBN officials for staff audit, he could not get to the roots of the matter.
Stories had been going round for some time that a cabal in the Accounts Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been maintaining ghost workers and fleecing the government of millions every month through their activities. Sources gathered that some of the staff who have either been dismissed or moved on were the ones who raised the alarm that years after they were sent away from service their salaries were still being collected by some top shots in the organisation. Even when the issues involved were raised and discussed and the CBN came up with ways to ensure that the culprits were caught, they were not successful.
This we gathered has necessitated the EFCC that has received several petitions over the issue to now get involved. According to our source within the EFCC as well as the NSCDC the arrangements are going to be done with the annual start emoluments data capturing which is to begin in the next couple of days. With this, the real number of staff would be known and the issue of ghost workers which has been costing the government millions of Naira every month would be a thing of the past.
