NO VENUE FOR MURTALA NYAKO’S IMPEACHMENT PANEL...

Members of the seven-man panel constituted by Adamawa State Acting Chief Judge (CJ), Ambrose Mammadi, to investigate the state Governor, Murtala Nyako, and the Deputy Governor, Bala Ngilari, over alleged gross financial misconduct have been ejected by owners of the hotel where they began sitting on Monday.Daily Independent gathered in Yola, the state capital, on Tuesday that the management of the hotel, J & J Holiday Villa, where the panel held its maiden sitting sent the members packing “for security reasons”.
The impeachment panel was raised on Friday last week by the Acting CJ following a resolution to that effect by the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
The Clerk of the Assembly, who is negotiating for venue for the panel’s sitting was helpless on Tuesday, as other hotels he visited equally turned down his request for the use of their premises equally for security reasons.
The panel, it was gathered, then moved to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Club, where state chairman of the NLC tactically declined, claiming to be performing the lesser Hajj (Umrah) in Saudi Arabia.
The panel’s next port of call was the Adamawa State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, where there were divergent opinions from the leadership on whether or not to give out the conference hall for the impeachment panel’s sitting.
Up to press time on Tuesday the panel was yet to secure another venue for its sitting.

Reports also indicated that the state Council of Chiefs and Emirs had held a meeting towards intervening in the imbroglio.

“Our traditional rulers deliberated on how to reconcile the lawmakers and the Executive for peace to reign,” a source close to the meeting said.

Meanwhile, as the impeachment process continued to gather momentum, speculations within the state capital have indicated that the Governor has concluded plans to resign from office.

Some political stalwarts and associates of the Governor who preferred anonymity told Daily Independent in confidence in Yola that since the process of impeachment has taken a different dimension despite the Yola High Court order restraining the lawmakers from going ahead with it, it will rather be better for him to resign.

According to one of the sources, if Nyako’s resignation will bring peace back to the state, then he may not have any other option other than step down for peaceful co-existence in the state devoid of sentiments.

“This will also dislodge calculated attempts by political enemies of the state to capitalise on the impeachment saga and make the state un-governable,” the source added.

One of Nyako’s commissioners (name withheld) who spoke to our correspondent lamented that it was worrisome to note that “the same legislators, who unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Nyako two months ago are the same people orchestrating the impeachment move against the same Governor”.

According to him, the present political quagmire in Adamawa State calls for sober reflection, stressing that “Governor Nyako in this dilemma should be regarded as a victim of circumstances”.

Commenting on the impeachment saga, state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Joel Madaki, supported the position of the Assembly, stressing that Nyako must account for the alleged loots against the people of the state.

He spoke of the inability of government to pay workers’ salaries for two months, which has pushed (them) workers into serious hardship.

In a related development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction of the Edo State House of Assembly continued its sitting in the Assembly Complex on Tuesday during which the lawmakers took observations on matters of urgent public importance from members present.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) faction on the other hand also continued its own sitting in the old Assembly Complex at the Governor’s Office, Benin.

The PDP members, who entered the chambers for the second day without the APC lawmakers, passed a resolution calling on commissioners in the Ministries of Works and Environment to urgently mobilise to site and reappraise what they called the substandard construction of the road leading to Urhonigbe in Orhionwon Local Government area of the state.

The APC lawmakers also among other resolutions revalidated the earlier suspension of the Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea, and the three PDP members, Patrick Osayimwen, Jude Ise-Idehen and Friday Ogieriakhi, for alleged misconduct.

The session which was presided over by the Speaker, Uyi Igbe representing Oredo West in Edo South, also suspended four other PDP lawmakers, including Kingsley Ehigiamusoe (Igueben); Emma Okoduwa (Minority Leader); Patrick Iluobe (Esan NE II) and Monday Ehighalua (Esan West).

After the plenary, Igbe told newsmen that the Edo State House of Assembly was not sitting in the office/chamber of the state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, but in the old chamber of the state House of Assembly which happened to be located in the Government House.

He said this was to allow the commencement of repair works at the chamber at the Assembly Complex at the Ring Road.

He added that the move “is a temporary measure, so that normal proceedings continue pending the completion of the repair of the hallowed chamber at the complex wilfully vandalised last week by suspended Honourable Festus Ebea and his cohorts aided and abetted by some unpatriotic policemen”.

According to Igbe, “By blockading the state Assembly, the evil intention of suspended Honourable Festus Ebea and his cohorts aided and abetted by PDP-controlled police is increasingly getting clearer.

“Their intention is to arrest Edo House of Assembly and stall our democratic march but they have failed as the duly constituted state Assembly has since resumed its plenary and oversight functions on the executive branch”.

During the sitting of the PDP lawmakers, the member representing Orhionmwon South Constituency, Friday Ogierhiakhi, speaking during matter urgent public importance, raised the alarm that many Urhonigbe residents have been rendered homelessness following massive erosion the construction on Urhonigbe road has caused.

Ogierhiakhi, who lamented that the road was constructed without roadside drainage and walkways, said it should be reviewed in a motion seconded by the member representing Esan North East Constituency II, Patrick Iluobe.

The factional Speaker, Festus Ebea, said the clean copies of the resolution will be forwarded to the Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, the Commissioner for Works and other relevant authorities for quick action to alleviate the plight of affected communities.
