Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on Thursday last week, took Maryam Mairo Mustapha as his second wife, fulfilling an Islamic rights or injunction that permits Muslims, all over the world, to marry more than one wife, so long as the two can enjoy equal love, rights and relationship from the polygamist. The wedding Fatiha was however done in utmost secrecy. The 36-year-old lady and new wife of the former Federal House reps Speaker, left for Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj immediately after the marriage. But whether her journey to the holy land was part of the marriage rites to honeymoon and was applied to the first wife, are matters of conjecture.
Most curious indeed is the fact that, Haj. Mairo, according family source, “left Nigeria after the private wedding ceremony in Kano”, a report that was collaborated by a Cable reporter. It continues that “The event was reportedly attended by only family members. No elaborate party was held”.
Maryam, the report added, who attended Federal Government Girls College, Kazaure in Jigawa State, and graduated from Bayero University Kano, was one of the volunteers for Buhari Support Organisations in the run-up to the general elections in 2015.
Tambuwal’s media aide, Imam Imam, reacting to the news, told our reporter that the marriage was “a private matter”. He however, disregarded questions being asked on the reasons why the marriage of a prominent person of the status of a state governor was held in secret and behind closed doors.
Tongues have also been wagging, whether the private marriage was accompanied with any undisclosed agreement entered into between the couple, on how to keep the marriage different from the traditional way of Muslim marriage. Even though the Governor’s religion allows him to marry more than one wife, the way and manner the wedding as conducted with the new bride dashing out of the country immediately has left room for speculations whether there were more motives to the wedding or whether the bride was already in the family way prior to the wedding Faitha..
