According to a source in the top hierarchy of the ruling APC, the leaders of the party were at a meeting some weeks before the list was released and the President disclosed that he was willing to send former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi out as an ambassador to any country of his choice in order to take the heat off him over the way he managed the affairs of Rivers State. The former Governor not only flared up at the meeting but was said to have engaged in hot exchanges with the President telling him that it was because of his election finances that he was in trouble and that there was no way he would accept a posting outside of Nigeria. Ameachi was said to have told the President that the best way to handle the issue was to meet it head long by ensuring that he was in Nigeria when and if Wike, who is the Governor decides to open the case against him over how he spent the trillions of Naira that accrued to the state while he was Governor.
Conversely, Ameachi stated that the other option was for the President to ensure that the current probe did not extend to the states as it would automatically mean that the President wanted to expose himself as well as his own campaign finances. Sources further disclosed that it took the intervention of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as the National Chairman of the APC, Odigie Oyegun before the President would see reason with what Ameachi said and the latter who was already saying he would walk away and never come back had to eat a humble pie and apologise to the President even though he had made his point clear.
