They call it the Central Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on account of its location and where it all started up North. It had always been the place to be for the most senior of all the pastors in the North until the Regions were created which started devolving powers to other pastors who headed the Regions. Despite all this, the Central Parish has continued to hold its own attractions. It is the richest of all the Parishes up North and one of the top ten in the country.
Not just that, members include ministers, Governors, permanent Secretaries, directors as well as many heads of government parastatals and offices, as well as top politicians and business executives. It is a place for high level of networking if you know how to do it without arousing suspicion. Based on this, the place is easily one of the choice places to be for business owners who want to show that they are clean, Christians and want to meet top players in Government who belong to the Redeemed Church.Quite naturally young men and women who want opportunities such as links to people in government, spouses as well as connections would also flood the parish. It is also guaranteed that the volume of offering and tithe collected in the church would be significantly more than what other parishes collect which translates to more money for church management.
More obvious however is the fact that pastors of such a parish is likely to receive more gifts and sympathetic hearings from people who are highly placed in the society, this is more so if the pastor is believed or proven to be a firebrand who knows how to pray and ro who delivers messages that are apt.
Based on this, among the pastors in Abuja, heading the Central parish as an Area Pastor or Zonal Pastor is considered a rare privilege. Thus, there is stiff competition and immense lobbying to get appointed as the pastor in charge of the richest parish around. It is not unusual for lobbyists to go as far as Lagos to ensure that they are given the post. Though the church leadership on its own also ensures that any pastor posted to head the parish is sound biblically and can hold the congregation of wealthy, influential and enlightened people which also include youths in large proportions, lobbying is always powerful.
For instance some three years ago, a pastor who had presided over the parish for the mandatory four years had to go to Lagos to make the leaders prevail upon those who headed the church in Abuja to allow him to continue to stay as pastor. Eventually he was eased out about a year ago.
Even when he was eased out, another pastor who came in but had not spent a full year has been moved out only for another pastor to be posted in to make a third pastor within about twelve months.
The immediate past pastor was believed to have been removed after he was praised for his ability to pray by the General Overseer Pastor E.A.Adeboye, during a trip to Abuja.. Pastor Adeboye was said to have been impressed by the way the pastor prayed so much so that he gave him one of his cars as a gift and even said that with pastors like that, the search for a successor to him is no longer going to be difficult. The statement was said to have been noted by all the senior pastors around. Shortly after Papa’s visit, he was transferred to a less visible parish in Gwarimpa where he presently presides.
