Mr. Gaya, 62, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, was a former governor of Kano and is the current chairman of the Senate Committee on States and Local Government.
He is also a member of the committee on Marine Transport.
A member of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Gaya was the Senate’s deputy minority whip between 2007 and 2011.
He was elected to the Senate at that time on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, APP, which has since merged with other opposition parties to form the APC.
