CJN DESCENDS ON BAD EGGS IN THE JUDICIARY...

IN line with the Chief Justice of Nigeria’s drive to rid the judiciary of corrupt officials, the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) has placed a federal high court official on half salary, pending his trial before an Abuja Magistrates’ Court over an alleged official misconduct.
The judiciary staff, Mr Mahmood Idris, the Federal High Court, Abuja’s bailiff, who is standing trial alongside one Mr Danladi Ademu, said to be a relation to a former Director of Pensions Office at the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Sani Teidi Shuaibu, facing trial over an alleged embezzlement of N20 billion pension funds.
In the commission’s letter of interdiction to Mr Mahmood, with reference number FJRC/5/7/05/19/126 and signed by the secretary, Mrs B. A Bashir, the commission noted that “following the trial of the court official before the Magistrates’ Court on the allegation of forgery of documents, that the Federal Judicial Service Commission, after careful consideration and in accordance with Regulation 52 of the Federal Judicial Service Commission Regulations, that Mr Idris be interdicted on half pay pending the determination of his case at the Magistrates’ Court.”

The court’s bailiff was alleged to have committed forgery with Mr Ademu, following the bail granted by Justice Adeniyi Ademola to Dr Shuaibu, who is standing trial for alleged embezzlement of pension funds.

The bail sum was for N500 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties are also expected to be resident in Abuja, who must own landed properties anywhere within Abuja and must worth the bail sum and they are also to possess valid tax clearance certificate. The title deeds of the properties were also to be verified by the deputy chief registrar of the court before retaining copies.

In an attempt to fulfil the bail conditions, Dr Teidi’s sureties provided documents purporting to be title deeds for a property, whose value is equal to the bail sum of N500 million.

In compliance with the directives of Justice Adeniyi Ademola, the deputy chief registrar of the Federal High Court wrote two letters for verification of the certificate of occupancy submitted by Teidi’s sureties with number 42/42/82 dated February 4, 2002, issued in favour of Mr Attah Ossian Ahaba, in respect of plot number 24, Block V, Federal Government Layout, Gwarimpa, Abuja and Certificate of Occupancy number 211/24/97, dated August 11, 2003, issued in favour of Onum Ofitu, in respect of plot number 18, Federal Government Layout, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

Idris Mahmood, as a bailiff of the court was handed the letters to deliver to the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development for the required certification.

Idris later returned to the deputy chief registrar of the federal high court documents purported to have emanated from the ministry, indicating that the certificate of occupancies had been verified and confirmed to be genuine. He also deposed to an affidavit wherein he categorically stated that he went to the said property for physical verification as part of the verification procedure.

Luck, however, ran out on the court bailiff, following revelations that the purported verification letters from the Housing Ministry were forged, including the valuation report of the estate surveyor purporting the property to be valued at N500 million.
