---Bridled with Nepotism
and blackmail for sex
Before Sanusi Lamido
Sanusi became the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, he did not hide his love
for women. Indeed his career with the First Bank was one study in how women
should not be treated. abujareporter.com gathered that he never spared any woman
he liked and felt like sleeping with. Once you fell into that category, he
would ensure that he slept with you or else you would be given punitive postings
that would ultimately lead you to leaving the bank. This was even as he
occupied the position of the head of the bank. This seemed to have
laid the foundation for his career in the country’s apex bank, the Central Bank
of Nigeria. Many stories have been written about the involvement of Senator
Bukola Saraki in the appointment of Sanusi as the CBN Governor. We can only
emphasise here that what Sanusi had going for him was his ethnic group and his
understanding of the rudiments of the workings of the banking system as he only
fit into a structure that was already on ground. Even then, he jettisoned the opportunity
to quietly operate by aligning with the opposition where his benefactor who
brought him into CBN had pitched his political camp.
The CBN Governor even
as he settled down in the new place did not drop his old habit of blackmailing women
into sleeping with him, whether or not they were married. Not few of the top female contractors who got
choice jobs from the CBN warmed his bed, according to sources. The case of a
lady employee that was leaked to the e-media last year was perhaps one of the
many cases that came up. It was obvious that once the Governor liked you as a
lady, you would fly and your career would be enhanced. Not a few staff knew
this though they worked in total trepidation and were so afraid that their
lines were bugged.
He
didn’t hide his
preference for children of the elite as staff of the CBN. It was as if
the children
of the poor and the middle class were never meant to work there. Media
reports of
nepotism were either swept under the carpet or simply disregarded. He
never
really cared. When he did some of his random reshufflings, deploying
some of
the directors who were from ethnic groups other than his to less juicy
areas,
no one dared to complain. many children of his friends, those of
powerful people in the society have been given posts and appointment in
the bank without such jobs going through the normal process of
advertisement. Quota system was thrown to the winds so also merit as
many of those who appointed to work in the bank got their jobs based on
who they knew rather than whether or not they were qualified. When you
look at this vis a vis the implications for the teaming staff who have
to now work with these unqualified recruits, and the overall implication
of using unqualified men to man sensitive posts in the apex bank, the
effects of this would be
Sanusi who has
assumed the poise of an anti-corruption crusader today is however not without
his own skeletons. Apart from the overflogged stories of how he influenced the
takeover of banks people who did not support the move to make him the CBN Governor,
there have been stories of his multi-billion Naira involvement in farming
especially in the Kaduna Kano axis where he was alleged to have bought a farm
for three billion Naira, started another farm and is presently building a
3billion Naira tomato puree factory.
